New work: The TABLE series (2010- present)

My work encapsulates a process which starts from using/ appropriating what is available to me at the time. Part of the process is sitting down at my table. In this most recent TABLE series, what’s on my table determines the direction of the work I am going to make. Each piece is not planned in advance nor it is perfected. However once started it can lead to other pieces. Created in a particular moment in time, that can be an hour, an afternoon or over a period of a week or weeks, encapsulates the moment when it is created, chancing a result that can be a success or a failure. And by doing so interrogates its artistic value.

Jane Crawford, film-maker and director of the Estate of Gordon Matta-Clark, discusses the significance and influence of the innovative New York alternative space 112 Greene Street on Matta-Clark and his peers.

In the 1970's, vast areas of lower Manhattan in New York were empty. Industries moved out of the city, there was a mistrust in the government, high rates of unemployment and crime, the many anti-Vietnam war protest marches. In a city faced with an economic crisis, a group of artists (painters sculptors dancers filmakers musicians) began occupying the large empty factory spaces in SoHo, transforming them into studios in where to work and live. Artists shared spaces, helped each other and collaborated in projects that were experimental and valued new ideas of process over the finished outcome. The streets and the factory spaces were used as setting for the work, because they were empty and for free. The white cube gallery space in where to show and sell the work became innapropriate and redudant for these artists creating artwork impossible to sell. Art was for artsake, not for money.

The 112 Green Street Gallery opened to give home to this new ideology. The space was bought by Jeffrey Lew and was used by the emerging SoHo vibrant art community to show a kind of art that nobody was interested in. There wasn't a programme of exhibitions or a curator in charge. Artwork went up and was taken down by the artists themselves who agreed in advance who was going to show and when. 112 Green Street allowed artists be free to create, explore and experiment new ideas. Collaboration and cross over of artforms: dancers versus artists dancers, filmakers versus artists filmakers.

I have recently found a copy of the book "New York Painting and Sculpture: 1940-1970" by Henry Geldzahler in a charity shop. This book is a perfect complement for this doucmentary. In fact Geldzahler (Curator of Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, at the time) also features in this documentary.

The legacy tour

Merce Cunningham's last work before his death on 26th July 2009, was premiere in London at the Barbican in October. It was first shown in New York on his 90th birthday, 16 April 2009.

This was the first time I saw a live preformance of Cunningham's work. Managed to buy a ticket at the last minute after listening in the radio about the show.

When I arrived at my seat (GG13) the dancers were unexpectedly on stage warming up. Did some quick sketches.
Unforgetable experience.
Full admiration for the dancers who have performed with astonishing beauty.
Perfect combination of movement and sound.

In his work, Cunningham is interested in creating the possibility of a new experience. Through looking and listening, figuring out that it shouldn't look like something else, but instead making us think of what is that we are looking at.

For Part I of his choreographic project at Tate Modern, Michael Clark and his company have been resident in the Turbine Hall for seven weeks, making the development and rehearsal of his work publicly visible for the first time.

The Company's presence has transformed the monumental space into an arena for experimentation and practice, foregrounding the processes - both artistic and practical - behind making and performing Clark's work.

As well as devising movement for his company's trained dancers, Clark has invited over 75 non-dancers to join weekly workshops with the company. The group of untrained dancers have learned a piece of dance, specially devised by Clark, which will be performed en-masse in the space over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Clark has presented work within gallery spaces on many occasions, but this residency enables him to respond directly to the iconic architecture and specific character of Tate: as a communal space and as a museum. This series of experiments is, in part, preparation for a new, large-scale performance commission due to be premiered as Part II of the project in June 2011.

Passingwords finds its source in books, magazines, comics and paper ephemera as well as television recordings circa. 1960's up until present. The significance of these images to wotadot are related to memory and deconstructed, they represent pieces of a coded message.

Passingwords aims to communicate fragmented stories, memories and the images are intended to be seen as messages, stories or words that were said and forgotten and through the process of over layered drawing these layers then represent the time that passes and the message that loses its original meaning and finds new coded and often apocalyptic themes.

Passingwords... is inkjet printed on 100gsm drawing paper previously painted with ink and bleached, in a numbered edition of 12 copies, concertina bound. The front and back covers are made of cardboard painted with black and white gloss paint, respectively. Each book comes inside a plastic sleeve, numbered and signed.
